Always boogled me as to who did the Etienne De Crecy production. I've been enlightened that these innovators in light and sound technology are 1024 architecture.

KATY B IS ON A MISSION TO TAKE OVER, WITH THE HELP OF BENGA

KATY B (BRIEN) is arguably the first bona fide female star of that homegrown branch of contemporary R&B/house known as funky. It's only upwards from here for the good-looking 20-year-old Brit School graduate with the sort of powerful pipes that could reasonably be termed "soulful" is the scene's best bet for chart success.
The Florence of funky? Why not, she's got that really strong, emphatic singing style, where every word is clearly, almost theatrically enunciated, as though she's got her Brit vocal coach breathing down her neck or she's auditioning for a part in said stage school's big end-of-term production. She's certainly one of the few people we can think of with one foot in the grime, garage and funky camp, and the other in the Hi-de-Hi! holiday camp, working with Benga and Geeneus, yet been featured vocalist on underground hits for Ministry of Sound, and her own debut single proper.
Katy On a Mission, is being issued by Rinse, the label spin-off of Dizzee Rascal's favourite former pirate radio station and yet she's also, in a former guise as Kattie B, done hi-NRG Eurodisco versions of Katrina and the Waves' Love Shine a Light and Deniece Williams's Let's Hear It for the Boy

Bass-heavy but definitely more of a song than a series of low-frequency bursts and blasts, it's the perfect balance of urban edge and smooov R&B/soul... Well done Katy B and Benga!

SICKEST DJS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE GATHER

Global Gathering has been a firm favourite among dance music fans for years - and it's not hard to see why. With over 150 DJs crammed into two days of music there's something for everyone, from crowd-pleasing chart-toppers to the quite frankly bonkers Hardcore Till I Die arena. 


Faithless took on headlining duties on the first night, playing a set that spanned their impressive back catalogue, with a couple of curve-balls thrown in for good measure. An equally impressive crowd lapped every beat up, and hit the roof for the anthemic 'Insomnia'. 

A real gems of the festival was to be found away from the main stages, with an energetic performance from BBC Radio 1's Kissy Sell-Out getting a small but dedicated crowd raving away on the Spectrum Arena. 

While the late-comers were forced to settle in for the night a fair distance from the arenas the VIP camping area was within spitting distance of the arena gates. To anyone planning on a Global Gathering trip next year - if you can afford the VIP area, it's worth it for this fact alone.

Saturday's marathon session brought the crowds out in style, with amazing early sets from Jaguar Skills and Scratch Perverts perfect for an afternoon in the (patchy) sunshine. But as the night descended, the crowd really got into the mood, and the fun really began. Joker and Caspa hit the FWD/Rinse stage, which unfortunately rounded off its music at 11pm, presumably due to its outdoor setting.

As previously mentioned, the Hardcore Till I Die arena was utterly insane, with 160+bpm beats blaring out to a crowd dressed almost entirely in day-glo, who certainly seemed to be enjoying themselves as Darren Styles and MC Storm took to the stage - though this reviewer for one couldn't handle the frenetic pace.

Ten years on Global Gathering is going from strength to strength, and just like the stream of fans that headed straight out of the arena for a 6am after-party, it doesn't look like it's going to be stopping any time soon.
